Istanbul's Magical Concert Venue: An Underground Cistern

Underground music takes on another meaning at Istanbul's Yerebatan Sarayi, where sound and light play among ancient pillars.

An underground cistern is an unusual place to attend a concert recital. But Istanbul’s Yerebatan Sarayi is not what most people think of when they think of a cistern. With 336 marble columns rising 9 metres (30ft), where lights dance on water that provides excellent acoustics, it is more like a glorious temple than a mundane water catchment vessel. To wander through the echoing chamber is an almost mystic experience.
