On This Day: Pliny The Elder died in 79AD

Gaius Plinius Secundus, or Pliny the Elder, was a Roman scholar, writer, naturalist and philosopher who published a 37 Volume Encyclopedia titled Natural History in 77AD.

Pliny the Elder was born in 23 or 24AD. His family was wealthy, allowing him the financial freedom to study and write later in his life.

As a schoolboy he studied rhetoric, or the art of public speaking. This was a valuable skill at the time and was taught to all students. More than simple performance or projection skills, rhetoric included teachings in manners and general knowledge to ensure that public speakers were well informed on as many topics as possible.
