Julius Caesar on Germany

Having talked about Germany in relation to the film The Fall of the Roman Empire, I thought it might be interesting to read about what Julius Caesar knew (around 58 - 51 B. C.) about the tribes across the River Rhine, in the country we know today as Germany.

Germanic tribes like the Suebi, which caused Caesar a few problems, were certainly feared by the Gallic tribes in Gaul (France & Belgium), especially those that lived along the Rhine and who suffered constant raids by them across the river.

If you read about Caesar's Conquest of Gaul in his own book (See Penguin Classic) you'll see that many of his own Roman legionaries were initially terrified to do battle with the Germans, such was their fearful invincible reputation.
