Croy Hill on the Antonine Wall

One feature that is still used today just as it was by the Romans who manned the Wall and fort, is a natural stone causeway across the ditch. The ditch along this section of Wall was cut through solid rock and it was decided to leave a part of the natural rock in place, so as to cross the ditch.

This extra gateway through the Antonine Wall was probably used as the later Knag Burn gateway near Housesteads fort on Hadrian's Wall, as a way of stopping the civilian and trade traffic from having to go through the fort.
