Military Dedications

The large Roman fort at Maryport on the west coast is undergoing some summer excavations. The fort was part of a series of forts and smaller milefortlets which extended along the west coast beyond the end of the actual Hadrian's Wall line at nearby Bowness-on-Solway.

The fort has not had any real excavations carried out within it for some time, but 140 years ago a remarkable discovery of 17 military altar stones was accidentally made.

These stones give us a huge amount of information such as dates, which gods were being worshipped by the Roman army at that time, the names of military units, names of emperors and soldiers, events that may have led to the dedication and a huge amount of info which give us a unique link to a moment in time.
