Historic day trip in Ostia Antica

A visit to Ostia Antica is at the top of my list for day trips from Rome.

Even though Pompeii gets all the press as Italy's most important archeological site, many historians consider the ruins of the port city at Ostia Antica to be just as significant. It is an easy, inexpensive 45-minute rail trip from Rome, and provides a great opportunity to walk among the ancient ruins of this once-thriving city.

The more frequently visited Pompeii is a three-hour trip each way, which means a major part of the day is spent on a train with just a few hours to explore a large site.

Historically the two sites differ with Pompeii having been a busy garden city of wealthy residents and Ostia Antica being a military and commercial centre occupied by a working-class population.
